The Hunt
“Suddenly, a woodcock bursts through the trees, cutting through the morning mist. The guide quietly points the direction. You hold your breath. Finger on the trigger. The whistle of wings. Bang! A clean hit.”
What Is a Woodcock?
The woodcock (Latin: Scolopax rusticola), commonly known in Latvian as šnepe, is a small woodland bird with a long bill and highly developed sensory organs. In English, it is known as the woodcock, and the distinctive whistling sound of its wings has become an integral part of the forest soundscape in spring and autumn.
This elusive bird is one of the most sought-after hunting trophies across Europe—valued for its cunning nature, unpredictable flight, and pronounced seasonal migrations.
Woodcock Hunting in Latvia
Latvia lies on one of Europe’s most important bird migration routes, making woodcock hunting in our forests not only a tradition but also a unique opportunity for hunters from other European countries to take part in controlled and well-organized paid hunts.
Since 2019, we — AP Hunting — have been organizing woodcock hunts in the Salacgrīva and Pāvilosta regions, where vast, open, and naturally rich hunting areas are available. The season runs from September 1 to December 15, and a maximum of 12 participants are accepted per hunt.
