Large goose (71–89 cm, 2220–4060 g, usually over 2500 g) with a very dark head and neck (compared to the similarly sized Greylag Goose).
In flight, the wings show no contrasting light and dark patches.
Bill tip and base black, the lighter part between them orange or yellow. Legs orange. In young birds, the legs and orange parts of the bill are paler, more grayish, and young birds are smaller in size.
By the voice, it can be distinguished from the Pink-footed Goose (harder to distinguish from the Greylag Goose).
