Hunted Animal Species and Hunting Seasons
- The following limited and unlimited game animals and their hunting periods are established:
3.1. Limited game animals:
3.1.1. moose (Alces alces) – from 1 September to 31 December;
3.1.2. red deer (Cervus elaphus):
3.1.2.1. stags from 1 September to 15 February;
3.1.2.2. red deer stags up to two years old from 15 August to 31 March;
3.1.2.3. hinds from 15 July to 31 January;
3.1.2.4. calves (up to one year old) – from 15 July to 31 March;
3.1.3. (deleted by Cabinet 12.04.2022. Regulations No. 227);
3.1.4. (deleted by Cabinet 12.04.2022. Regulations No. 227);
3.1.5. (deleted by Cabinet 12.04.2022. Regulations No. 227);
3.1.6. capercaillies (Tetrao urogallus) and black grouses (Tetrao tetrix) – from 1 September to 31 December;
3.1.7. wolves (Canis lupus) – from 15 July until the hunting quota set by the State Forest Service is reached, but not later than 31 March;
3.1.8. hazel grouses (Bonasia bonasia) – from 1 September to 31 January;
3.2. Unlimited game animals:
3.2.1. hybrids (Tetrao tetrix x Tetrao urogallus) – from 1 September to 31 December;
3.2.2. brown hares (Lepus europaeus) and mountain hares (Lepus timidus) – from 1 October to 31 January;
3.2.3. pine martens (Martes martes), stone martens (Martes foina), polecats (Mustela putorius) – from 1 October to 31 March;
3.2.4. badgers (Meles meles) – from 1 August to 31 March;
3.2.5. (deleted by Cabinet 12.03.2024. Regulations No. 172);
3.2.6. pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) – from 1 August to 31 March;
3.2.7. wood pigeons (Columba palumbus) – from 1 August to 15 November;
3.2.8. domestic pigeons (Columba livia) – from 1 August to 31 December;
3.2.9. woodcocks (Scolopax rusticola) – from 1 September to 15 December;
3.2.10. carrion crows (Corvus corone) and magpies (Pica pica) – from 15 June to 30 April;
3.2.11. bean geese (Anser fabalis rossicus), white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons), Canada geese (Branta canadensis), northern pintails (Anas acuta), shovelers (Anas clypeata), wigeons (Anas penelope) – from 15 September to 30 November;
3.2.12. greylag geese (Anser anser), coots (Fulica atra), teal (Anas crecca), gadwalls (Anas strepera), mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), garganeys (Anas querquedula), tufted ducks (Aythya fuligula), greater scaups (Aythya marila), black scoters (Melanitta nigra), goldeneyes (Bucephala clangula) – from 20 August to 14 September on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and from 15 September to 15 December every day;
3.2.13. beavers (Castor fiber) and muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) – from 15 July to 15 April, in drainage systems – from 15 July to 30 April;
3.2.14. foxes (Vulpes vulpes) – all year round;
3.2.15. non-native or invasive species in Latvia – American minks (Mustela vison), raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides), fallow deer (Dama dama), mouflons (Ovis orientalis), sika deer (Cervus nippon), raccoons (Procyon lotor), nutrias (Myocastor coypus Molina), bobak marmots (Marmota bobak) – all year round, but golden jackals (Canis aureus) – from 15 July to 31 March;
3.2.16. roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) – bucks from 1 June to 30 November, fawns (up to one year old) and does – from 15 August to 30 November;
3.2.17. wild boars (Sus scrofa) – all year round.
